Copy of Featured Speaker: August 12, 2016
Assistant Governor Carol Levin will be speaking with the Memorial Spring Branch Rotary Club about the 2016-2017 Theme - Rotary Serving Humanity.
Featured Speaker, May 6th: Daniel Millikin
Daniel Millikin is the co-owner & founder of Edible Earth Resources, a landscaping firm specializing in using edible plants in their residential and commercial designs.  A ninth generation Texan, Danny loves Texas’ climate zone and wildlife. He is an avid forager and a farming advocate, primarily focusing on urban farming.
As a regional expert in growing all things edible, he regularly appears on KHOU's Great Day Houston for gardening tips.  Daniel also teaches classes for several organizations, including Urban Harvest, OHBA, area garden centers, and Farmstead: Grow & Eat.

Memorial Spring Branch Rotary Shines at District
District Conference was amazing this year - as always.  For those of you who missed the speakers, workshops, events, and fellowship, you have just got to attend next year!

This year our club was well-represented at the District Conference:
  • Rod Mace was honored with a Presidential Award from District Governor Nick Giannone.
  • Lindsey Kroll and Gwen Corolla are basking in the reflected glory of their partners!  Irene Hickey was awarded Rotarian of the Year for District 5890, and Wayne Staton was honored by Rotary International with a Regional Service Award for a Polio-Free World.
  • Bill Haglund (helped by 30-40 other Rotarians) ran the entire conference.
  • Bill Hall created a wonderful Celebration of Life which honored those Rotarians who had passed on this last year.  He also served as Parliamentarian and ran the credentials and voting.
  • Lawrence and Sharlene Barris - Co-chairs of the 2017 District Conference, broke all previous records by registering 200 Rotarians for Eric's Conference next year at La Torreta Resort on Lake Conroe.
  • Sheila Franklin & Ute Schneider co-hosted the Beer Hospitality Suite with members of the University Area Rotary Club.  The 5 Hospitality Suites raised a total of $2400 for Polio Plus.  That was combined with another $2400 raised in raffling BMC's donation of 4 Diamond Seats at an Astro's Game.  All together, this $4800, combined with the Gates' Foundation 2 to 1 match, will purchase 24,000 vaccinations against polio!  24,000 children who will never be crippled by polio.

Community Outreach through Parades and Floats
Community Outreach through Parades and Floats

Sam Parker, a fellow Rotarian with the Houston Club, will speak to us about how he got into this business and how the parade floats and business help promote community outreach and spread your message through a fun and entertaining venue for all types of demographics. He will speak to us about the different types of parades and how they impact the community and bridging generation, gender, and cultural gaps from holiday to educational to county parades, etc.  Sam has the only parade business in Houston, and his stories and anecdotes are very entertaining and educational.
