Stories
State Representative Jim Murphy is serving his fourth term in the Texas House, representing District 133 in West Houston.  Murphy serves as the Chairman of the House Corrections Committee and is a member of the Ways & Means Committee.

Rep. Murphy is President of District Management Services, a consulting firm assisting economic development organizations. For the past 20 years, he has served as one of the driving forces of Westchase District - the 4.2 square mile business district in West Houston.

Murphy has served on numerous boards in our community including the HCC Board of Trustees, the Houston West Chamber of Commerce, West Houston Medical Center, and the Houston Association of Commercial Real Estate Professionals. He is an active member of the Greater Houston Partnership, the Houston Association of Realtors, and the Urban Land Institute.

Murphy’s community service includes work with the Jaycees -- where he served as local President and as State President. He was named one of the Five Outstanding Young Texans in 1995. He has coached youth sports and served on the pastoral council of St. Cyril’s Catholic Church. He was also a founder and Vice Chair of the Alief Education Foundation and was appointed to the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute’s Advisory Council by the UT Regents.

Murphy grew up in West Houston and graduated from Strake Jesuit and UT Austin. He and his wife, Dr. Kathleen Murphy, have two sons, Robert and Pace. They are active members of St. John Vianney Catholic Church.
The annual Rolex Raffle is the Memorial-Spring Branch Rotary's largest fundraiser.  It allows us to fund our college scholarship program, leadership opportunities for youth, health projects overseas, and our many other programs that touch so many lives in Houston and around the world.

Each member of our Rotary is expected to sell at least $500 of raffle tickets each year.  When this happens, we raise over $32,000.  So far this year, $12,260 in raffle revenue has been turned in - a great start!

Sheila asks that everyone turn in their money as soon as possible as there is a lot of work to do behind the scenes  between the time the money is turned in and the time we hold the drawing.  The work starts with trying to get all of those staples out of the tickets packages!

If you have questions, or need to arrange to have your funds picked up, please call Gwen at 713.820.8606 and she'll arrange to have someone meet you.

Hi Everybody,

It's shocking to realize that my year as your President is almost half over!  Whew...well...still another 7 months to go, so better buckle in!

PLEASE NOTE:  NO MEETING ON 11/27/15 (DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING) or 12/25/15 (CHRISTMAS DAY)  OR 1/1/16 (NEW YEAR'S DAY)

This Friday, 11/13/15, we are saluting our Veterans.  I'm bringing my Dad's Bosun's whistle  (WW II and Korea) and my Grandfather's flag case and photo (WW I).  If you have something from your time in service, or that of a family member, please bring it.  We can set these things out on the tables and share their stories. If you have any suggestions about how else we can honor our Veterans on Friday, please contact me!

Then on Friday 11/20/15, I'll be sharing our service project at the Guerrero Clinic. I have great pictures, the people were fascinating, the experience was absolutely one for the bucket list!  Here's a picture of all of us volunteers!

Ed Wilson is starting to assemble his leadership team, or at least people to nominate for his leadership team.  According to our by-laws (which are available under Club Documents on the club website - www.msbrotary.org), we have an order of succession to office in our club,  Treasurer to Secretary to President-Elect to President, plus we have a board of directors.  4 seats will be open for the board, plus we need somebody to step up and say "I want to be Treasurer - I want to be President in 4 years".  Please contact Ed Wilson.

Wayne and I are having a party at our house on the Saturday After Thanksgiving - 11/28/15 and everyone is invited - spouses and children too!  Come anytime between 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm - bring something yummy to share - stay as long as you like and leave when you are ready to go!   Our address is 4838 Rockwood Dr., Houston, TX 77004.  We live right by the University of Houston, just across Wheeler.

Time for me to go get ready for Rotary After Dark!  Maybe I'll see you there!
