Copy of Featured Speaker: August 12, 2016
Assistant Governor Carol Levin will be speaking with the Memorial Spring Branch Rotary Club about the 2016-2017 Theme - Rotary Serving Humanity.
Featured Speaker, Dustin Chase
Dustin Chase will be visiting our lunch on January 8th to talk about the upcoming Oscars and movies you should've seen, but probably didn't, in 2015.

Dustin, who grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, started writing film reviews for a local video store while still in high school. His experience helping, discussing, and debating with other movie buffs, was invaluable.  During his senior year at The University of North Carolina Asheville, Dustin landed his first on camera Oscar nominee interview, Jennifer Tilly.
After graduation he spent a year in Los Angeles and in 2009 moved to Galveston Island.  There, he  worked on Texas Art & Film.  Texas Art & Film was created with entrepreneur Evan H. Zimmerman and became a platform to publish Dustin’s reviews. He was then accepted into The Houston Film Critics Society in 2012 and became the film critic for Texas’ oldest newspaper The Galveston County Daily News in 2011.
Dustin’s talent and work ethic (and stamina) have led to many opportunities and much success.  He watches and reviews every single live action film that runs in theaters.  This means he publishes over 200 by-line film reviews a year.
Dustin has also worked in television and radio.  Before the demise of 92FM, he did a “Livin’ Large” segment with Joe Leydon & Doug Harris.  Dustin has a show on CW39’s NEWSFIX as their on air film critic for a segment called Flix Fix airing every Friday. Dustin is currently the only broadcast film critic in Houston giving weekly film critiques on television.
Landrum Middle School Event

The next “Most Improved Students” luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, January 14 at 11:30 am at Landrum Middle School.  Please contact Mary Grace Landrum, 713-722-8307,  if you would like to attend as a table host.  If you can attend, please arrive by 11:15 so you can sign-in at the office.  The address is  2200 Ridgecrest Dr., Houston, TX  77055.

The plan is for each of us to sit at a table of students during lunch and provide them with practice talking with an adult.   Be sure to encourage those who are less talkative.   We’ll provide suggested questions.

One of the top skills that employers say is lacking in the younger workforce is the ability to present themselves and their ideas well.   Our goal is to provide the students with practice.

WELCOME BACK!
The holidays are just about behind us and a New Year lies ahead.  Christmas and New Year's Day landed on our meeting days, so we haven't seen each other for awhile.  Here are some reminders to get you back in the swing of things:

Jan 08, 2016 club meeting featuring speaker Dustin Chase, WB39 Film Critic

Jan 12, 2016 - All Clubs Meeting for Districts 5890 and 5910 - RI President Ravi Ravindran will be the guest of honor.  (Newer members, Ravi's visit is a BIG deal, so come on out for dinner!)  Gwen has more details if you need them.

Jan. 16, 2016 - Potluck Party - This is a wonderful opportunity for fun and fellowship.  Dona and Darden Burke are hosting at their home.

Jan 22, 2016 - Memorial-Spring Branch Rotary, Club Business Meeting.  We will be evaluating our progress in achieving the goals of our 2015-16 Strategic Plan.

Jan 29, 2016 - Ashley Kress of the Rise School will be on hand as we present her with a $1000 check for the school.

Featured Speaker, Ashley Kress
On January 29th, Ashley Kress, Development Director for The Rise School of Houston, (Hey!  She's my neighbor!) will provide us with an update on the school and on the wonderful kids they serve.  At this meeting, we will present Ashley with a $1000 check for the Rise School of Houston.  You may learn more about The Rise School by visiting their website: http://www.riseschool.org/

Dinner with Rotary International's President

The All Club meeting is scheduled for January 12, and the President of Rotary International, "Ravi" Ravendran, will be our honored guest and speaker.  RI President Ravi doesn't have time to visit every Rotary District in the world, but he is coming to ours!  I couldn't find out how many Districts he does visit, but there are 34,000 Rotary Clubs around the world!

Our district has 63 clubs.  When we all meet, we call it the All Club meeting, because it is the one time in the year when ALL the clubs in our District come together. There will also be an EXPO where each club will have a table to display their service projects and areas of involvement.  I love going around and seeing what the other clubs are doing.  Who wants to help with the exhibit?

So...who is going?  This is your opportunity to register.  Do you want to sit at a Memorial-Spring Branch Table with your fellow club members?  Reserved seats at our MSB Table(s) will be $75/per person.  I'm thinking that we can fill at least 2 tables!!!

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT TO SIT TOGETHER WITH YOUR FELLOW CLUB MEMBERS.

ONCE WE KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE WANT TO SIT TOGETHER, WE CAN RESERVE THE TABLES.  YOU CAN PAY THE CLUB TREASURER.
