MSB Member Eric Liu speaks on Nutrition and Health
The speaker for the day was the one and only Dr. Eric Liu, Past President of our club and presently one of the outstanding crop of Assistant Governors in District 5890 along with Lawrence Barris. Eric’s talk was about nutrition and vitamins as part of our food intake. He gave us several helpful suggestions about how to take our medications with or without food depending on whether the medication is soluble in water or fat. He indicated that many of the same considerations are present in taking vitamins because each one dissolves differently. Eric said that people frequently take vitamins and supplements incorrectly because of when they take them, whether they take them with or without food and because they take dosages which exceed the levels which the body can process on a daily basis. As to meals, he said that it was imperative that we eat breakfast each day to prevent the body from beginning to burn muscle mass for energy and encouraged people to eat a higher protein diet with the goal to get vitamins from food sources instead of pills and supplements. Moreover, he said as a rule of thumb, if it grows on a tree, eat it! In addition, all types of fruits, vegetables, nuts and roots were great sources of vitamins. He encouraged members to drink died sodas in moderation and avoid sugar drinks, regular sodas, fruit drinks, energy drinks and sweet tea because of the sugar content. Last, he said that we need more sleep, seven to eight hours each night, to perform at peak levels.
