Houston City Recycling Program
Sharon Moses joined us from the City of Houston to talk about its recycling program. She is a lawyer by degree so had a lot to learn about moving into this role. Houston's growth is going to add a lot of trash in the coming years and landfilling is getting more expensive. The curbside program began in 1990 with the implementation of the 18 gallon bucket program. They recently upgraded to 96 gallon containers! There are free recycling centers for those not currently on the pick up route. They expect to expand the routes in the coming two years. She mentioned that paper and cardboard are in high demand so please recycle those. The funds secured from placing the recycle material is helping to fund the pickup routes. Please check www.earth911.com if you have something to recycle that is not currently accepted by City of Houston centers. It will provide the closest center that accepts that item.
